She was looking for a little fun…

Violet Douglas wants one night where she can be normal. Where she can do something for herself and not be just her sibling’s guardian. So when she spies a tall, dark and sexy stranger, she’s ready to let her wild side roar. The last thing she expects is to see her one night stand one week later, when she drags her delinquent kid brother to the Alpha Dog Training Program.

He wasn’t looking for a commitment…

Sgt. Dean Sparks is used to keeping women at a distance, and yet he can’t resist Violet’s snapping wit or smile. So when he suggests a friends-with-benefits arrangement, it seems like the perfect solution to their undeniable attraction. No emotional entanglement, just mind-blowing sex.

But with their lives becoming more and more entwined, Dean realizes that casual isn't enough for him anymore. And as Violet finds herself leaning on Dean in a way she never has, will her fears put more distance between them? Or can she let go of the past, and take a chance on happily ever after?

One Lucky Hero The Men in Uniform Series eBook Codi Gary

One Lucky Hero is the first book in the new series Men In Uniform. We meet some of the characters in her novella I Need a Hero (which I loved).

The main couple is Violet Douglas and Dean Sparks.

Dean is in charge of the Alpha Dog Training program. The program helps juvenile delinquents serve their sentence by learning how to take care of and train dogs that are getting a second chance in life. Dean is happy with the way the program is doing but he's also desperate to go back into action. He just needs his psych to clear him back for duty. He's not looking for romance since he doesn't think it's fair to start something just to leave soon after.

Violet's life is nothing more than a huge responsibility. When her mother committed suicide and her dad left, she became her siblings guardian. She did it out of love. She cares for them immensely but this situation has put a damper on her social life. Starting a serious relationship is not in the schedule.
When her girlfriend asked her out to attend a concert, she is ready to party for the first time in a long time. Unfortunately, Dean is not making it easy but as the night progresses things between them change. Their one-night stand turns into more when a week later, her brother is forced to attend the Alpha Dog Training, making it impossible for them to avoid each other any longer.

Codi Gary's book's are a must for me. I just know that I enjoy her stories. In One Lucky Hero, both main characters are likable. They both have reasons not to start a serious relationship and they try really hard to avoid it.

There were many sweet moments coming from Dean. I love his relationship with his lazy dog, how he helps Violet at home despite her assurances that she can do it all. He was there for all the Douglas siblings, making it impossible for me to dislike him.

Violet was an admirable character. She has done everything to keep her family together. She was super supportive of her siblings and she knew when she was in over her head too. It just took her a little bit to recognize it. It's hard to put your trust in someone new.

I wonder who's next in this series...

One Lucky Hero The Men in Uniform Series eBook Codi Gary Reviews

This is my fist Codi Gary book. Violet Douglas is 24 and the legal guardian of her teenage siblings, Daisy and Casey. Violet had been through a lot and rarely has time for herself. When she meets Dean Sparks, she just wants a little fun - a one night stand.

When violent first meets Dean he comes off as standoffish. Dean doesn't want a relationship. He seems dark and bruding. At first it's hard to understand why Violet is interested in Dean but she's young and young girls tend to go for the dark, mysterious type.

The story does touch upon suicide, stalking, domestic violence, and sexual assault. The characters are well developed. Both Violet and Dean have a lot of baggage and there is a lot of drama, so you shouldn't read this book If you're looking for something light and fluffy.

I did like the story but I didn't love it. However, I did like it enough to possibly read another book by Codi Gary. Some parts of the story seem to drag and I had to skim those chapters . The author spent at least two full chapters on the one night stand.

Quick Summary
Violet Douglas has been raising her younger sister and brother for years and she barely has time to live her own life. So when she meets Sgt. Dean Sparks at an outdoor concert she decides to have a little fun for once and goes home with him. But things get complicated when her younger brother, Casey, is arrested for graffiti and sent to the military's Alpha Dog Training Program as an alternative to Juvie. One problem...Alpha Dog is run by her one night stand and now that Dean has found Violet again, he's not so sure he wants to let go of her. But both have history and baggage that they need to overcome before they realize they are worthy of happiness.

What I Liked
I will be honest, this barely held onto it's third star for me, and the reasons why are in the next section.

But I did enjoy reading more about the Alpha Dog Training Program and some of the boys that are a part of it. We didn't see too much of that side in the prequel novella so it was great to have it in this book. It was also great to watch Dean realize how much he loved the program and helping the boys and see him grow into someone who can really make a difference for the program. He really struggled with wanting to go back to war and prove himself and Codi Gary did a good job and showing his development. I would have liked a little more substance for his character; maybe it's just because Violet has so much going on, but Dean came across as a little underdeveloped. I also really liked how real the characters are in their actions and speech. Daisy might have been a little over-the-top sassy for a 17 yr old but everyone else was great. Violet was only 23 yrs old and she came across as that age. Her interactions, the way she talked to friends and family, everything was very genuine. I also liked that when a certain someone (view spoiler) shows up in their lives they don't all immediately jump into a normal interaction. The events of the past can't be changed and it can be very hard to forgive, so Violet's reactions were very realistic and it was nice to have an author not feel like they had to tie everything up with a bow.

What Needed Work
The cover and description for this book make it sound like a pretty lighthearted contemporary romance; maybe some angst with the brother, but overall lighthearted like the prequel novella. Not so because there is so much drama and heavy subject matter in this book. So just be prepared.

What I Didn’t Like
What did bother me was Violet; she was so confrontational and often angry. Now based on Violet's upbringing and all her problems she has every reason to be very distrustful and quick to judge negatively but I personally don't like people like that, so it made reading about her hard for me. Even when she knows she's lashing out she still keeps doing it and Dean is the target of pretty much all her anger. And though there are a few times Dean might deserve it, there are also a lot of times that he doesn't and it makes me wonder what Dean sees in Violet and why he wants to spend so much time with her. Side character Tyler Best also came across as rather douche-y in this one, so he didn't really endear himself to the reader, or at least not this reader.

Nevertheless, I do intend to read the next book, Hero of Mine, in this series.
